... so you have decided to go to Pattaya - well good luck... I will try to explain everything about this place, as always there are pros and cons, for coming here, and you should be really aware who should and who should not come here.
First of all - Pattaya is an interesting place, and very very famous all around the world - you would be able to see more foreign people then locals. It is being invaded by so many nationalities that it is not Thai City anymore - you can find people from Europe, Australia, America (both Americas), Japan, Korea, China, India... not sure about Africa. I have not seen a place in Thailand were i would be able to see so many Japaneese turists and India men... yes men - you will not see many indian women - this is a town mostly for men. 90% of the turists are males. i will explain why in a moment (but most probably you already know).
I want to focus on positive aspects:
1. City is close to Bangkok - so even if you have just a weekend you are good to go to Pattaya - as this only takes like 1,5h to go there - either by bus or by grab.
2. City is located at the see side - so you are able to catch some sun bathing, swimming just a moment before you go back to your country
3. City (or rather place) is famous for water sports - south from Pattaya Center - you can find many places where you can rent a board, or schedule a course - make sure you do it as early as possible - as they can be pretty busy. They know english - and they are able to teach you. The prices are nice in comparision to Europe - even Poland.
4. There are many things to see - Sanctuary of Truth, Big Buddha temple and many more
5. Monster aquarium, Night shows, Muay Thai - many many things that you can enjoy - which i highly recommend
6. Prices - even though Pattaya is a holliday city - it is not as expensive as one might expect - the hotels are cheap, the food is quite affordable - and attractions are much cheaper than in Bangkok (ie. Muay Thai) - and still are on a quite high level - but be honest who can tell if the fight is on the high or low level...
7. Night street - trust me you would be safer on the night street than outside - just having a beer (see below), of course people will be trying to trick you to step in to the bar by advertising Ping Pong (pretty sure it is not the regular Ping Pong). It is still nice to see all the lights and the people having fun - of course do not go there with kids ...
Now the dark side of the city... this is an actual sin city... it is much worse than Amsterdam or any other Sin Cities across the globe. For instance - in Amsterdam you need to go to the "Pink/Red District" - and you still are safe there. In Pattaya you are not.
You cannot get into the bar - to sit and drink your beer without being "attacked" by a swarm of "BarSucklings" which would definately try to tell you that you can do everything with them for a sum of 5,000 BAHT... then it would be reduced up to 1,000 BAHT... It is definately not nice not to be able to enjoy music, concert, or anything like a night life - without the ladies trying to grab you by hand, by arm,,, or even by... something else. Sometimes it is not even funny any more.
My Reco: go to the 7-eleven grab a beer or two and go to the beach... and yet there you still need to be carefull - some of the ladies might follow you there.
What was strange/difficult for me - is seeing all those white (mostly white) old (mostly old) and the girls (sometimes teenagers - at least it seems so) hanging on their hands - i can only imagine this as a "great everlasting love". I am pretty sure (i know a few examples) that some of those couples are real regular couples - but most of them are just one night stand and it is just something that you see all the time there.
My Reco: still you should come see this - of course if you are traveling with family just stay away from Pattaya at night - during the day you will not see any of this. It would be clear, gentle and nice.
There are a lot of places for doing shoping, entertaining, etc. so a regular turistic city - that you can find everywhere. Adding to this Sea and the water sport you can try - this can be a nice city break from Bangkok, or a great "Bye-Bye" to Thailand on your way back.
Hints:
1. Transport:
a.) From BKK - you can get here by Bus, i would othewise suggest Grab - as it might be the same price and much longer to get to Bus station (in BKK and in Pattaya). I have done my math last time. And if there are more of you - then definately you can think about Grab In 2024 (Autumn) the cost of Grab from BKK to Pattaya is about 1,5 k BAHT and the Van would be something about 2,0k BAHT. Use your app
b.) To BKK - you can either use app, or you can book a car through the travel agency - you can find a lot of those on the streets everywhere
2. Hotels: Try Booking as always - it is full of hotels - they are kind of cheap - but you need to watch out - the cheapest hotels are mostly used by "sex turism" - so if you do not like to see teenager girls almost stripped with everything uncovered - then you reall want to chip in more - and select other hotel. If something is over 50 EUro per night per person - you should be good. and for that price it would be a hotel close (like 50 m) from the beach.
3. Beach: in the city center - the beach is clear, but the sea is not - i have seen a few people swiming in it. If you want beach - you might want to check southern part of the city
4. Watersport - if you want to rent a board for windsurfing - you can just step in, for Kite you need to have papers to rent. If you want to book a lesson then you definately need to contact the school at least two-three weeks in advance
5. Travel agencies: you can book everything there - from Muay Thai tickets, lesson to visiting the most famous side, and a car to BKK. Remember to hagle a little - it should bring the cost down by 30-40%. Try to check at least a few - not book something with your first agency
